On the latest episode of the HomeKit Insider Podcast, we cover the newly-leaked Hue doorbell, some rumored devices types coming to Matter 1.5 this spring, and talk about the impending iOS 18.4 release.
We start off this week's episode rounding up some of the new features coming in iOS 18.4 that are most relevant for the smart home. New features include a new recipe guide, Matter vacuums, and more.
On the heels of the iOS 18.4 update, we pivot to the first Matter smoke detector hitting shelves. Also included with iOS 18.4, Sensero is the first compatible model up for preorder.
As Matter is published publicly on GitHub, it's possible to learn a little bit about its development. Multiple tipsters have sent in sightings of various devices that could potentially be included.
The GitHub shows the CSA is targeting irrigation systems, soil sensors, pergolas, shutters, screen doors, gates, cameras, audio doorbells, cabinets, and more as in active development.
When we reached out for comment, an alliance spokesperson confirmed the ongoing work on various features in the GitHub, but that nothing is guaranteed to make the next build at this point. Those decisions follow a process and will be decided closer to those release dates.
In other news this week, Meross released its new second-generation water leak sensor. It has a smaller form factor but otherwise is compatible with Apple Home.
Samsung has also decided to release its first Qi2 charging tree. This is awkward, as Samsung's phones themselves don't support Qi2 natively, and require a case to add the feature to use the function.
Lastly on the episode, we cover a great aftermarket solution to add fast wireless charging to your EV. Soonish makes new charging mats that can add dual 25W MagSafe pucks that are more reliable and faster than manufacturer in-car chargers.
