The highly questionable reliability of the leaker notwithstanding, the move to 256GB would make a lot of sense... mostly because it gives Apple the chance to do what it did with the iPhone 15 Pro Max: raise prices without, technically speaking, raising prices. The base model 16 Pro/256 would cost $1099, same as the 15 Pro upgraded to 256GB. But Apple would get to boost the minimum 16 Pro selling price by $100 in exchange for the added 128GB of storage, which has got to be almost pure additional profit considering what Apple's cost must be for a 256GB chip vs 128GB.
