Detail from the grand prize winning photograph, "Heroe" by Ivan Silva
The 16th annual iPhone Photography Awards contest has been won by an image of an exuberant boy, shot on an iPhone 12 Pro.
As it has since just about the launch of the original iPhone, the iPhone Photography Awards (IPPA) have been celebrating the best in photographic imagery from around the world. Photographers have to enter in specified categories, but the only stipulation is that the images must be taken with some model of iPhone.
This year's grand prize winner is Ivan Silva of Mexico, whose "Heroe" photo contrasts the young boy with a pickup truck holding tree cuttings.
"We especially congratulate this year's Grand Prize Winner, Ivan Silva of Mexico," said the judges in a statement, "who receives the Photographer of the Year Award for his image, Heroe, where a young boy feels on top of the world, and we are all in the wonderful position of rooting for him!"
As well as the grand prize, there is an overall Photographer of the Year, and two runner-up positions. This year the Thea Mihu of Germany won first place for her iPhone 12 Pro Max shot, "Soy Sauce Village," which the judges said "uses a formal approach to heighten the photo's sense of solitude and focus."
The second place Photographer of the Year was Bosnia's Sasa Borozan with "Taming Waves," shot on an iPhone 13 Pro.
In third place was Derek Hager of the USA, with "Tucson Morning," shot on an iPhone X.
Americans took first place in four of the subject categories. Those were Skye Snyder for the Animals category, and Scott Galloway for Nature, both using the iPhone 12 Pro Max.
Sofia Ershova took first place in the Children category using her iPhone 13 Pro. And Tao Fan used an iPhone 11 to take first place in the Other category.
The 17th annual IPPA contest is now open for submissions, and the closing date is March 31, 2024.
