Ikea is preparing new smart home products

Regulatory filings have leaked two new sensors from Ikea that in conjunction with a HomeKit-compatible hub will detect motion or sense if a window or door is open or shut.

The company filed the documents with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in June. One is called the Parasoll Open/Close Sensor, and the other device is a Vallhorn Motion Sensor.

The Parasoll Open/Close Sensor will likely consist of a larger primary unit with wireless functionalities and a secondary magnetic fob that detects the state based on proximity. These devices can monitor doors, windows, mailboxes, laundry machines, and other objects that involve the action of opening and closing.

The second product, Vallhorn Motion Sensor, may either complement or replace the Tradfri wireless motion sensor. The documents indicate that AAA batteries may power each sensor.

The two sensors, powered by Zigbee technology, are created in partnership with IoT manufacturer Leedarson. According to the test methodology, the sensors will need a smart hub to operate, either Ikea's advanced Dirigera hub or its original Tradfri device, Zatz Not Funny reports.

Zigbee is a wireless communication protocol specifically designed for low-power, low-data-rate applications. It operates on the IEEE 802.15.4 standard and provides a reliable and efficient way to connect and control devices in various applications such as home automation, industrial automation, and smart energy management.

It's often used in smart home systems to enable communication and interoperability between smart devices.
