Apple releases new betas

Apple has handed out its second developer beta for macOS 14 Sonoma, which can be downloaded to Macs and tested out by users enrolled in the program.

Developers enrolled in the program can access the latest builds by either visiting the Apple Developer Center or updating their Macs with the beta software. For public users, beta versions will be made available through the Apple Beta Software Program shortly after the developer versions are released.

Apple released the first beta for macOS Sonoma right after its introduction at WWDC on June 5. The second beta is build number 23A5276g, replacing the first build, number 23A5257q.

The list of updates for macOS Sonoma, also known as macOS 14, is headed up by changes to the lock screen and screensavers, as well as enabling widgets on the desktop. For users of Zoom and other video conferencing services, a Presenter Overlay is also provided to make it easier to educate others. Other changes are also made to Safari, Messages, and privacy features, while a new Game Mode aims to make Mac more useful for gamers.

AppleInsider and Apple strongly suggest users don't install beta operating systems or other beta software on "mission-critical" or primary devices, as there is the small chance of issues that could result in the loss of data. Testers should instead use secondary or non-essential hardware and ensure they have sufficient backups of their critical data at all times.
