Would love to see AppleInsider do an overview of Passkey with a compare and contrast to the various authentication apps, hardware keys, and other 2FA/MFA options. I feel like anyone who’s not a dedicated security professional investing time, effort, and money (e.g., hardware keys) into trying to come up with a workable solution today is at risk of spinning their wheels at best and locking themselves out of accounts at worst if they don’t have a clearer picture of the pros/cons of all of the competing solutions.
The fact that PayPal is signing up to support Passkey is potentially a good thing, whether you like PayPal or not, because they have a huge user base and will help move the Passkey initiative along. But I’m still not sure where the whole industry is headed because it all seems so fragmented right now on both the tools side and the support side. This probably isn’t something that’s going to resolve itself even in the next 5 years, but I’d like to have some level of confidence that whatever I invest my time, effort, and money into isn’t going to be a waste.
